1. Alan Wake

Titular best-selling psychological thriller author was going through a writer’s block, but when he tries to take a small vacation, it seems that he is attacked and has to fight off the “darkness” that possess people and animals alike. Action-adventure with horror elements, Alan Wake is paced like a thriller show, cinematic and slow, which is in alignment with the visual style of the rural region of Washington and linear storytelling. The main enemy, encountered by the players will be Taken – possessed by darkness creatures and humans that cannot be attacked outright, because they are shrouded in black smoke, blocking the attacks. Only after dispelling the darkness with a source of light players are able to affect the enemies. When the enemies are getting too close, Alan can perform a slow-motion dodge.
Two more episodes were published for the first game, called “The Signal” and “The Writer”, directly continuing the story of the main game, and completing the first season.

2. Overcooked

Overcooked puts the player into the shoes of two restaurant chefs at once. Each level is a kitchen, and your goal is to cook a list of meals following the onscreen recipes. The time is limited, and there are restrictions on how much money the player can spend on the ingredients. The player controls two characters that can be switched at any time or ordered to do a list of actions.
The kitchens are often set in the oddball places, such as a pirate ship, two speeding trucks, a pedestrian crosswalk, or an iceberg. The level elements are dynamic and may move or change during the gameplay. Tables and ovens can slide, and the cooks can fall off the level, though they will respawn shortly.
There’s a story mode in which cooking is tied to the plot. The game is set in the Onion Kingdom that was attacked by an insatiable spaghetti monster. The chefs travel back in time to refine their cooking skills and feed the monster when it appears again.
Since even in the single mode the player has to control two cooks, the game predictably has a co-op multiplayer and a competitive mode in which the players try to “outcook” each other. Both modes, however, are local, and there’s no online multiplayer.

3. Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation is an action-survival horror game played from the first-person perspective for a more intense experience. The game is not a sequel to any of Alien games, but it is directly connected to the original 1979 Alien film, so the gameplay includes historical references, and the game itself transfers the unique atmosphere and the old vision of the future. The action is set 15 years after the film events. Young Amanda Ripley accompanied by Nina Taylor and the android Christopher Samuels reaches a distant space station Sevastopol to investigate the case of her mother Ellen Ripley (the protagonist of the 1979 film) disappearance. On the way to the Nostromo’s (Ellen’s spacecraft) flight recorder, Amanda will face plenty of hardships like hostile androids and Aliens because the Sevastopol station is wholly abandoned. Players have to explore the entire station inhabited with Aliens. Due to the crafting system, players can create the necessary gear to prevent contacts with countless enemies.

4. Alien Swarm

Alien Swarm is a top-down multiplayer shooter remade from the game mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. According to the main storyline, a group of troopers reaches the colonized planet occupied by the swarm of invasive aliens. They aim to search for survivors or, if needed, to destroy the colony to prevent the spread of hostile aliens. After finding no civilians alive, the group realizes that the only way out is planet devastation with a powerful nuclear bomb. The main gameplay idea is in completing levels in science-fictional locations and eliminating waves of Swarm aliens with all kinds of weapons to get new equipment and to unlock individual achievements. As the game is class-based, players are able to choose between 4 types: Officer, Special Weapons, Medic, and Tech. Each type has two characters with different abilities. The whole loadout can also be selected before starting the mission. The game is absolutely free-of-charge and offers both single and co-operative (up to 4 players) experience.

5. Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is a first standalone and the third overall DLC to the original Sins of a Solar Empire title. It is also a strategy set in space with the science-fiction lore.

Gameplay

The point of the game is to conquer as many planets as possible using the given resources. The protagonist can be chosen out of three races: industrials, aliens and psychics each with unique special abilities.
The gameplay process occurs exclusively in online mode, but single battles and succeeds against enemy AI is possible too. However, the campaign as a whole cannot be played offline.

Key features

As in usual RTS, the gameplay is centered around resource management — the title's economy consists of prices on Metal, Credits, and Crystal — each with the individual gain conditions. So it would be impossible for instance to sell all of your metal to the friendly guild — after the wholesale, stock prices decrease and economy shifts towards them like real-life one.
While exploring the world, the player may stumble across habitable planets and anomalies which prevent the player from getting to the goal. Anomalies include asteroids, hostile environment, and ice fields.

Rebellion DLC

The expansion adds two new units into the gams: Loyalist and Rebel — delegates of any races can choose between them. A graphical engine was updated as well.

6. Salt and Sanctuary

Salt and Sanctuary is a 2D action with role-playing elements developed by Ska Studios.

Plot and art style

The game follows an unnamed protagonist who escorts princess on a sail to her marriage in the distant country. The ship gets attacked by brigands that slay the whole crew and later gets destroyed by sea giant Kraekan resulting protagonist to find himself on a mysterious island. The hero must now find a way from the island and save lost princess.
The game is notable for its hand-drawn watercolor art style with the dark and cold palette.

Gameplay

The gameplay is heavily inspired by From Software’s Souls series and Castlevania franchise. The game mixes traditional Metroidvania-style exploration with several game mechanics borrowed from Dark Souls. At the beginning of the game, the player chooses one of eight classes. The class affects initial equipment of the character and his starting skills. It does not, however, affect character’s stats or restrict him from acquiring any skills from the Skill Tree later in the game.
The combat relies on different types of attacks, dodging, blocking and use of various abilities and items. There are more than 600 weapons, pieces of armor, disposable items and other equipment that can be found throughout the game.
The game features local multiplayer, both cooperative and competitive.

7. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising

An expansion to Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 that can be played without the original game. Uprising features additional campaigns for three factions: the Allies, the Soviets, and the Empire of the Rising Sun. The plot continues the events of Red Alert 3, making Allied victory in previous game canon.
The Soviet Union fights for its very existence because Allied corporation FutureTech is developing a weapon that can freeze time. Its leaders want to erase Soviet Russia from the history once and forever. The war in Allied-occupied Japan continues, as there are still pockets of resistance that Allies have to suppress, and there are two Russian generals taking over parts of the Empire. There's also a standalone campaign that reveals the origins of Yuriko Omega, a Japanese girl with psionic abilities, and follows her as she becomes a commando for the Empire, and later a prisoner of the Allies.

Unlike some of the previous games in the series, Red Alert 3 – Uprising allows no multiplayer modes, neither cooperative nor competitive.

8. Homeworld Remastered Collection

Homeworld Remastered Collection is a remastered collection of real-time space strategies Homeworld and Homeworld 2 including all their expansion packs developed by Gearbox Software.

Plot

For eternity, the people living on Kharak were certain, that this planet is not their homeworld. There was a Question of Origin, which could not be answered by any scientific research. A spaceship crashes on the planet's surface. A Guidestone and a hyperengine were discovered. The people of Kharak unite to build a spaceship and set off to find their true origin.

Gameplay

Homeworld is a real-time strategy, which takes place in space. Like in most strategy games, the gameplay focuses on gathering resources, building armies, and using them to annihilate the enemies or complete tasks. There are both singleplayer and multiplayer modes available to the players.

The singleplayer campaign consists of a number of levels. On each level, the players have a primary objective with several side-quests which can change as the mission progresses.

The main ship of the fleet serves as a mothership, which can build other ships. The mothership cannot move. There are immovable objects on every level, which can be mined using special ships that will take the ores to the mothership. These resources are later used to build new ships, such as miners or attack vessels.

Remastered Edition featured

The gameplay was left untouched by Gearbox Software. Only the graphics and the UI got heavily refined.

9. Heavy Metal Machines

Heavy Metal Machines is a free-to-play multiplayer action racing game developed by Hoplon. The game is heavily influenced by the classic Rock n' Roll Racing and more modern titles, such as Rocket League, Twisted Metal and the whole genre of MOBAs.

Plot

The players are free to choose from several characters to play the game. Each one of them has their own backstory and reasons behind their decision to participate in the event.

Gameplay

The players control the heavily modified vehicles with guns installed on them. The objective of the game is to steal a bomb, that is located in the center of the arena and get it to the enemies base to destroy it.

Upon picking up the bomb, the player holding it has to ride around the whole perimeter of the arena and avoid destruction by the enemy forces. The player can be assisted in his efforts of bringing the bomb to the enemy base by their teammates that can cover the bomb carrier.

Each character present in the game (there are more than ten characters in the game's roster) has not only their own backstory, but a specific vehicle that differs in handling, gameplay, and most importantly, its role. Like in most MOBAs, there are several player roles: a tank, who pushes through the enemies front lines; a support, who heals and buffs the team; a defender, who stays behind and defends their base by any means necessary.

10. Enemy Mind

Enemy Mind is an indie side-scrolling space shooter developed by Schell Games.

Plot

You play as a parasite that comes from the deep space. You can take over the minds of humans on distance and control their actions. The players use this ability to take over spaceships and eliminate human fleets.

Gameplay

Enemy Mind resembles a classical horizontal side-scrolling shooter. The players control a spaceship on the left side of the screen, dodge enemy fire, and attack in return. The developers put a spin on a classic side-scrolling shooter which also serves as a narrational device.

The parasite that is controlled by the player can take over the minds of the ships' captains and turn them on the friendly ships. This mechanics allows for multiple strategies and puts a new layer to the gameplay.

More than 20 types of ships are present in the game with each ship differing in its armor, armament, and speed.

The game features multiple endings that depend on the types of ships you use and the faction these ships belong to. There are no voiced lines in the game, and the glimpses of the story revealed through the comms chatter the players read through between the game's levels.

Art style

The game is heavily inspired by old space sidescrollers, such as Galaga and Space Invaders. It boasts hand-drawn pixel objects and a soundtrack written by a psychoactive retro wave artist Rainbow Kitten.

23. Echoes+

Echoes+ is an intense retro action space shooter created with App Game Kit 2. It will test your reactions and concentration levels to the max!
Fight your way through wave after wave of neon coloured space enemies, leveling up your score multiplayer and shields as you go. The onslaught just keeps on building with new challenges the further you progress. You'll need to be super focused if you want a place on the global high score table, one blink and it can be all over!
Echoes+ is a showcase game made using App Game Kit 2 (AGK). You can learn more about App Game Kit 2 here:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/325180/Echoes modeEchoes mode consists of 10 levels of blasting action, each introducing a new enemy with different strengths & weaknesses.
When you get hit you lose energy but it can be replenished by collecting green power ups. Getting hit may also downgrade your weapon, but act fast and you can power it back up again. Increased kills means more power-ups.Time AttackJust want a quick blast? Then try time attack. In this mode you have to score as many points as you can in 3 minutes. You get unlimited energy but being hit incurs a points penalty.
Tips

  • The secret to a high score is collecting multipliers.
  • The more enemies you kill the more multiplier power-ups will be dropped.
  • Shooting stars will always drop a score multiplier.
  • Warning! Points lost if hit are linked to the score multiplier.
Survivor ModeThis is all about how long you can survive without taking a hit. The score is irrelevant!
Tips
  • Your weapon will power up over time automatically.
  • Time is your priority so shooting enemies might not always be the best approach.
  • Destroying planets might be risky but they drop shields which will protect you for 10 seconds, invaluable in this game mode.
Classic ModeThis has a simpler game play and modified controls making it more like the 80's retro games.
Tips
  • Use smaller and more controlled movements than in other game modes.
  • Try and stay away from the edge of the play area whenever possible.
  • Listen out for the warning sounds that mean a saucer is approaching.
Meteor Storm ModeThis challenges you to fend off increasingly frequent and dense waves of meteors. Destroy the golden meteors & collect score multipliers.
  • Tips
    • Your ship starts with a fixed amount of energy which cannot be replenished.
    • Getting hit reduces your energy but also causes you to drop some of your score multipliers.
    • Your weapon power is fixed and cannot be increased.
Asteroid Belt ModeHere you face snakes of energy that increase in both quantity and length at each new level.
    Tips
    • Your ship starts with a fixed amount of energy which cannot be replenished.
    • The score multiplier is linked to the number of asteroid belts at the start of the current level.
    • Your weapon power is fixed and cannot be increased.
    Zoo Trials (zoots)
    • These are a series of additional challenges. Each zoot can be attempted on any of the four difficulty levels, with harder difficulties contributing more towards your total completion percentage; Easy = 1%, Normal = 2%, Hard = 3% and Insane = 4%
    • Only the hardest difficulty achieved counts towards your total, so for the ultimate 100% score you need to complete each of the 25 zoots on insane difficulty.
    • Zoots can only be completed in specific game modes so make sure you check these on the zoo trials menu screen.
    • The Pause screen shows your progress towards and zoots.

Discover evidence of civilizations long since past, uncovering secrets about the galaxy's troubled history...

The current version of Pro Gamer Manager 2 is a alpha version of the game. What does this mean? It means that PGM 2 is still in its early stages of development. We have completely rebuilt the game from its predecessor, so this is a completely new game. It’s built on the original PGM idea and it’s designed to be developed through an early access process.
So what can you expect from PGM 2 in its current form?
While there are final and core game play features implemented, there are many that aren’t or will need to be tweaked.
  • Bugs and crashes are to be expected.
  • There might be performance issues for some players.
  • And more.

40. Blautopf VR - Geheimnis der Lau

The Blautopf cave system is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena of Southern Germany. Until now, the caves have only been accessible to a small number of scientists. But now, with BlautopfVR you can explore this hidden world through a Mystery Adventure Game.

Every year, over half a million tourist are drawn to the Blautopf in the historic village of Blaubeuren. What attracts them is a beautiful lake, shining intensely in mysterious shades of light blue colours. Underneath lies a broad and branched cave system with meter-high stalactites, underground lakes and huge rock halls, which hides behind the karst-spring. Yet none of the tourists have ever been underground, inside the cave. For over hundreds of thousands of years, this has been uncharted territory. Only in the 1980s, the cave system was discovered and has been successively explored ever since.

Blautopf VR makes it possible for a broad audience to interactively discover the fascinating inner life of the cave system via Virtual Reality. With the technique of Photogrammetry, big parts of the cave were scanned and then digitally rebuilt.

The creators designed the VR-Adventure Game BLAUTOPF VR – THE SECRETS OF LAU based on these virtual 3D-spaces. The player becomes a cave explorer, who is out on the search for his research colleague that goes missing. On his tour, the player is accompanied by his missions chief Karl, who gives him directions via radio signal. Deep inside the cave, the player meets the mysterious figure of the Beautiful Lau, a personification of the cave itself, who depending on the players’ decisions, appears to him as an enemy or as a helpful ghost. This VR-Game is produced for the high-end VR headset HTC Vive System.

A TELLUX NEXT/ SWR production in coproduction with KOHELET3 and IT MEDIA financed by MFG BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG and FFF BAYERN.
