1. Minecraft

One of the most popular games of the 2010s, Minecraft allows you to rebuild the environment around you. The world of the game is open, infinitely wide, and procedurally generated. It is composed of small 3D cubes that represent specific types of materials or terrain. The gameplay is centered on mining and building various structures of your choice. You can also craft items like tools, weapons, and armor. There's an option to shift to the first or the third person view.
Minecraft includes multiple modes that dramatically change the focus of the game. Survival and Adventure modes require the player to gather resources, hunt for food and fight monsters to survive. In the Hardcore mode, there’s even permanent death. Creative mode, by contrast, offers you to freely explore the world and construct whatever you want with unlimited resources. There’s also a multiplayer mode that allows the players to share their worlds and engage in the traditional MMO activities, such as player-vs-player combat.
Minecraft’s crude visual style, reminiscent of Lego cubes, became an iconic part of the popular culture. There are many myths and fan fiction surrounding the game, such as the legend of Herobrine, a rumored character that officially doesn’t exist.

17. Brave Fencer Musashi

Brave Fencer Musashi (ブレイヴフェンサー 武蔵伝, Bureivu Fensā Musashiden, "Brave Fencer: The Legend of Musashi") is an action role-playing video game developed and published by Square in 1998 for the PlayStation home console. The game involves real-time sword-based combat in a 3D environment; it also features segments of voiced over dialogue and role-playing game elements such as a day-night cycle and resting to restore energy.

The story follows Musashi, a young swordsman who is summoned to a parallel world to defend Allucanet Kingdom from the Thirstquencher Empire. He searches for the Five Scrolls, which can enhance the powers of his sword, while interacting with people from Allucanet and a nearby village.

Development began in early 1997, and was directed by Yoichi Yoshimoto, produced by Yusuke Hirata, and scored by Tsuyoshi Sekito. The game was a departure from Square's previous role-playing video games, which brought the team several difficulties during development. The game received positive critical response; reviewers praised the graphics in comparison to other similar games of the time, and found the gameplay, especially the action elements, very compelling. Musashi received a sequel in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 under the name of Musashi: Samurai Legend.

20. The Witch's House MV

The Witch’s House, originally released in 2012, falls within the tradition of Japanese horror RPGs with heavy emphasis on puzzle-solving and jump scares. Among other entries in the genre such as Ib and Ao Oni, The Witch’s House surprised fans with pixel-art that conceals truly frightening horror.
The Witch’s House is deliberately designed with traps at *almost* every turn--sudden death is unpredictable and it keeps players on their toes. Anything can happen at any time.
With completely remastered visuals, The Witch’s House MV will feel fresh to even the most familiar old-school fans. Fans will also be greeted by a new difficulty mode that includes new events upon completion of the base game.

  • A horror atmosphere wherein players solve puzzles based on clues found in the house.
  • Completely reimagined graphics that make for a beautifully terrifying experience.
  • Brand new unlockable difficulty mode with new events and dialogue.
  • Violence and gore that are not recommended for the squeamish. Player discretion advised.
  • Sudden deaths that lurk around every corner and await every misstep.
  • Items must be used deliberately as players solve the puzzles for themselves.
  • Fixed save points (just keep an eye out for the talking black cat).
  • Game pads are supporting and recommended.
  • Head phones *strongly* recommended.

Hello. I'm Fummy, creator of The Witch's House MV.
I'm happy to announce that we're finally ready to release the game.
The Witch's House MV is an RPG Maker MV remake of the original game, which was released back in 2012.
We remade all the graphics, including map tiles and character sprites, and worked hard to enhance the atmosphere and 2D beauty in The Witch's House. It took us five times as many hours to create this version, but we feel like we've finally managed to satisfy ourselves.
Aside from graphical improvements, we also added two new difficulty settings that was not present in the free version.
The first difficulty setting is a more accessible one that allows you to instantly retry. The other difficulty setting is a more difficult one which is only unlocked by those who manage to reach the game's true ending.
  • "The normal difficulty isn't enough to satisfy me..."
  • "I'm not averse to instantly dying upon reaching new areas."

If either of these describe you, then we recommend you give this new difficulty a try. You also may be able to uncover some new story bits concerning "her"...
The world of The Witch's House has been reborn anew, and we sincerely hope you'll all enjoy it.
My name is Dan Stern and I’m the Scholar of the First Deal at DANGEN Entertainment (sounds fancy, but it means I work with the devs to get their games released so you can play them).
Japan has a longer tradition in 16-bit horror games because of the variety of games that was released on the Super Famicom. But that wasn’t something I experienced because of growing up in the West. It wasn’t until I discovered The Witch’s House some years ago that I learned 16-bit games can scare me just as well as high-res AAA games made in 3D. I learned that even in pixel-art, horror is possible; it just depends on the creator’s mastery of atmosphere and timing. Fummy-san absolutely has that mastery and as silly as it sounds, I’ve never had so much fun dying a lot in a video game.
I was ecstatic to find out that not only is there a remaster of my favorite indie horror classic, but that DANGEN could help to get that game in front of fans that I know will love it. Playing The Witch’s House MV feels like a totally new experience and I’m sure you’ll have fun with the new content after you finish your first playthrough.
Cheers!

25. Cellar

Do you remember when as a little child you were sent to fetch something from the cellar and you were always afraid that something's lurking there in the darkness? Cellar will allow you to go back to these days and face the greatest fears from your childhood - join Lily on her quest to find her missing teddy, Blackbear the Pirate!
Cellar is a short, casual game created in pixel art. Gameplay is presented in top-down view (like Bomberman or early Zelda installments). At the core, the game requires you to find your way through a maze of crates and other stuff stocked in a basement and get the key that unlocks the door to next level. The ultimate goal is to find your lost teddy bear while avoiding dangerous traps and monsters that lurk in the cellar.
You're still here? OK, so here's some hard facts about the game:

  • It's a fine variation of Bomberman/Dyna Blaster in the world of Sokoban (you know, because of all the crates)
  • The game auto-saves only at the beginning of each level. Deal with it.
  • There are 8 levels. That's right, 8 of them.
  • It's a perfect choice to boost up your completion / achievement rate on Steam. You can get a nice, round 100% in about 1 hour, unless you turn out really bad at this game.
  • We actually said this already, but the expected playtime is about 1 hour. Enough for a refreshing break from all those well-known, repetitive AAA titles, but still short enough to keep you from getting frustrated.
  • You CAN actually speedrun through the game in 15 minutes, even though you're in a cellar and not a vault. Are you up for a challenge?
  • Speaking of challenge, there's also an additional, time-based difficulty setting that becomes playable after you beat the game once.
  • There are Steam Achievements, including those horrible hidden ones that you'll be dying to figure out before someone finally posts a guide for this game.
  • You can play it with a controller from the comfort of your couch. Or you can keep standing, that's fine too.
  • If you're still reading this, then we'd suggest you get the game, cause it seems we seriously got your attention.

27. The Bellows: VR Demo

"Of all the things you choose in life, you don't get to choose what your nightmares are. You don't pick them; they pick you." -- John Irving

The Bellows has recently been reworked from the ground up. Taking the knowledge gleaned from the previous release, Castle Steps has created a polished horror experience designed to show people just how scary VR can be. The game has been redone with brand new content, new scares, and a singular focus. Scaring you, scaring your family, and scaring your friends. Plunge yourself into a world of nightmares and fear, and discover just how frightening virtual reality can be.

Included in The Bellows:

- The Bellows
We've completely reworked the original Bellows title. While there are certainly nodds to the old game, almost all the content is brand new and completely revamped. It's shorter, scarier, and all around built to be perfect for showing off virtual horror in both home and arcade settings. The game has been built specifically for HTC Vive, but is also supported on Oculus Rift when being played through SteamVR. The game takes on average about 15 minutes to complete.

- The Bellows: Omni
Identical to the revamped Bellows experience described above, we're proud to say we've partnered with Virtuix to make a version of our newly improved game available for use with the Omni.

- The Bellows Legacy:
This is the game that originally came out Halloween 2016. It has some bugs that we were never able to resolve, but we've decided to include it nonetheless. We feel it would be unfair to remove a product people have paid for, although we recognize it has issues that render it a very flawed product on its own. It only plays on Vive, and there are no plans to update it. We hope you enjoy it, but please understand going in that there may be consistent crashes on some hardware.

31. Mimic Hunter

Mimic Hunter is an innovative, 2.5D, hardcore platform game that will take you on an epic adventure as the legendary master hunter Monsieur Ratimousse embarks on a journey to find his old mentor Barnabas and stop an ancient demonic force from devouring the mortal world. Unsheathe your sword and your platforming skills to climb forsaken towers, fight nefarious Mimics, solve unforgiving puzzles in an attempt to uncover the grim truth behind the nature of the Unbound. En garde!
Mimic Hunter was initially created as an entry for GameJolt's Adventure Jam 2017 #AdvJam2017 in no more than 2 weeks by Aliza Wenders and Derwen Llewelyn from Angry Cat Studios. But the journey doesn't end there! In those two weeks, we grew to love this game even more than we'd have anticipated, and we want to tell this uncommon story in its full length, with all the gore and glory! During the early development, we succeeded in creating a very unique, stable and innovative platforming experience, but we had to cut a megaton of features and ideas (and most of the story content) due to the lack of time. And that simply can't stand! ;-)
A free demo of the original #AdvJam2017 version is available on GameJolt, check it out! Just don't forget: it's only a fragment of what's to come!

  • Unique, cylindrical, mind-bending environment
  • Hand-drawn, macabre-esque art style and animations
  • Lore-rich story with many surprises, twists and mysteries spanning 5+ hours of playtime
  • Hardcore platforming gameplay with traps, timed puzzles and more!
  • Fencing! En garde!
  • Dangerous and mischievous, various enemy types, each with its unique behavior
  • A fully-fledged Tower Builder with which you can create and share your own adventure!
  • Competitive game modes such as Time Attack and Survival
  • Fully remappable control scheme
  • Steam achievements, stats and leaderboards

What is the goal of the game? The story mode takes you on an adventure to defeat a mysterious ancient force that threatens the mortal world. During your journey, you will encounter nefarious enemies, unravel the secrets of the Hunters' Guild's past, and solve demonic riddles and puzzles. There will be additional game modes: in Time Attack, you will be able to test your skills against the clock, and in Survival you can show how long you can endure against a horde of Mimics! How long the main story is?As Mimic Hunter is designed to be quite a hard game with scenarios that take multiple attempts to figure out and solve, we can only estimate the actual game time you'll need to complete the story featuring multiple towers and additional non-cylindrical levels with a lot of lore and textual content. On average, we think it will take about 5-10 hours to finish the main story. What are the key gameplay elements?Mimic Hunter is primarily a platformer, thus jumping, climbing and fighting are very important to master. Additionally, there are riddles and puzzles you can't solve by platforming only: you'll need to collect lore and figure out the secrets. Fencing is also very important to overcome your foes, and you must learn how to do it properly. You'll be also able to handle a lot of situations by avoiding combat or defeating your enemies via the environment if you're cunning enough.
How in-depth the Tower Builder will be?The Tower Builder (a.k.a. level editor) you get will be (almost) identical to the one we use to create the majority of the content. You can create any kind of tower with dialogues, scripted puzzles, traps, events, and share it with other people! Basic editing will be quite intuitive. What platforms will be the game available on?The game will be initially released on Windows. Later on, we plan to release it on Linux and Mac, too.

37. Castle Invasion: Throne Out

The king is not a nice gent. He’s given you an ultimatum. Surrender your castle or be throne out. (See what I did there? Because the king sits on a throne. . .yeah? . . . never mind.) With an army of misfits at his beck and call, you’d better pick up that bow and arrow and settle in for some crown duels.
Castle Invasion is the fun, frantic challenge of defending your castle against an army.

  • 50 frantic, action packed levels.
  • 5 deadly bosses.
  • Use coins dropped by enemies to buy over 40 weapon upgrades.
  • Wizards, jesters, knights, dwarves, executioners and more in an army of medieval misfits.
  • Full to bursting with awful, awful puns.

Upgrade, equip and fire your way through an onslaught of attackers with state of the art weapons such as the bow and arrow or the spear. Each enemy type is different. An arrow to the face won’t solve all your problems.
Play through day and knight. . . and night. Fight the darkness with fire to keep torches lit and out of the dark ages. Alternatively, just fight everything with fire, I’m not here to judge.
In time trial levels you control the speed of enemies whilst trying to finish the level as quickly as possible. Yes, that does mean dwarf slo-mo take downs.

Recorded message:
Whoever hears this message please listen carefully to this message...
This facility is not as it seems, there is evil in this place. There is no escape, they want to take your babies and use them for their evil experiments.
Don’t be fooled by the decor around you, they want you to feel like you’re in a safe place. The walls, rooms, paintings, sofas, and everything else is not real, they want you to feel at home but you aren’t, you’re in hell...
Be under no illusions, you will die one way or another. There is no escape, I’ve tried everything you could think of and as soon as they suspect something is up they’ll turn off the lights and enter the room.
There’s a reason they turn off the lights before they enter. The lights, they hurt their eyes, and by hurt, I mean they really hurt their eyes. Any light that you have, use it as it will keep them at a safe distance and may buy you some time.
The light can only buy you some time however, there is still no escape and no way out. The only way you can end the suffering and protect your unborn child is to take your own life before they get to you first.
